A state government-funded $4 million expansion of mental health facilities will provide additional support for mental illness sufferers in Geelong and its surrounding areas.
According to an official media release from the state government, the development – part of a $27 million expansion at Barwon Health – will create “six new acute adult beds, two new aged acute beds and include the development of an area for mental health triage”. Along with improvements to be made to existing high dependency and administration areas, it will help to provide support to an additional 160 people with mental illness.
Ms Lisa Neville, Minister for Mental Health, said that these upgrades will enhance the facility’s ability to “respond to emergency admissions and deliver even better results for people who need acute mental health inpatient treatment”, aiming to provide “the right care when and where it is needed”.
