Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT or ACAS) Finder

The Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) is a Commonwealth funded program which assists frail older people and their carers identify what kind of care will best meet their needs. In Victoria each team is known as the Aged Care Assessment Service (ACAS). ACAT/ACAS teams provide information on suitable care options and can help arrange access or referral to appropriate residential or community care options.

ACAT/ACAS teams can also assess and approve older people for Australian Government subsidised care, community aged care packages or flexible care such as extended aged care at home or transition care.

There are many aged care services that are run privately, by volunteer groups or by charitable organisations. You may access these without needing an assessment from an ACAT/ACAS. Some of these services will be free, while others may be offered if you're able to pay fees. For example, the Home and Community Care (HACC) Program doesn't require an ACAT assessment.

You don't need an ACAT assessment for:

• Home and Community Care (HACC) Program
• National Respite for Carers Program (NRCP)

You do need an ACAT assessment for:

• Approval for entry into an aged care home
• Approval for Community Aged Care Packages (CACP)
• Approval for Extended Aged Care at Home (EACH)
• Approval for Extended Aged Care at Home Dementia (EACH D)
• Approval for Transition Care Program
